Frequently Asked Questions
General Matcha Questions
What is matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from shade-grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, matcha involves consuming the entire tea leaf, providing more antioxidants, vitamins, and nutrients in every sip.
Where does Good Matcha come from?
Good matcha is sourced directly from the lush tea fields of Kyoto, Japan, known for its centuries-old tradition of cultivating premium green tea. Each batch is carefully selected to ensure the highest quality.
What are the health benefits of matcha?
Matcha contains L-theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid found in matcha, known for supporting relaxation and mental clarity.
A source of antioxidants like EGCG, which are known to help protect cells from oxidative stress.
A mindful way to unwind—traditionally enjoyed for its smooth, calming energy.
Naturally smooth and easy on digestion, with a gentle, sustained caffeine release.
What’s the difference between ceremonial and culinary grade matcha?
Ceremonial grade:
Highest quality, meant for drinking pure. Vibrant green with a smooth, delicate flavour. We recommend drinking this without added milk.
Culinary grade/latte grade
Slightly more bitter and robust, perfect for smoothies, baking, and lattes.
How long does matcha last?
Matcha stays fresh for about 12-24 months if stored properly. Over time, its flavour and vibrancy may fade, so we recommend consuming it within this period.
How should I store matcha powder?
To maintain freshness and flavour:
• Store matcha in an airtight container or zip lock bag
• Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
• For optimal freshness, refrigerate after opening.
Is matcha safe during pregnancy?
Matcha is generally safe during pregnancy when consumed in moderation. However, consult your doctor to ensure it aligns with your health needs.
Can I drink matcha every day?
Absolutely! Drinking matcha daily is safe for most people and can be a fantastic addition to your wellness routine. However, moderation is key—stick to 1-2 servings a day if you’re sensitive to caffeine.
Is matcha better than coffee?
Matcha offers a smoother energy boost compared to coffee. While coffee provides a quick jolt of caffeine, matcha delivers calm, sustained energy due to its combination of caffeine and L-theanine, which promotes focus and reduces jitters.

Can matcha be used in recipes?
Yes! Matcha is incredibly versatile and can be used to make:
• Matcha lattes
• Smoothies
• Pancakes
• Ice cream
• Baked goods (e.g., cookies, cakes, brownies)
Why is matcha so expensive?
High-quality matcha requires labor-intensive production, including shading the tea plants, hand-picking the leaves, and stone-grinding them into powder. This meticulous process ensures unmatched flavour and nutritional benefits, making matcha worth the investment.
Can matcha go bad?
Matcha doesn’t spoil like perishable food, but it can lose its flavour and aroma over time. Proper storage ensures it stays fresh and vibrant for longer.
How do I make matcha at home?
Making matcha at home is simple! Follow these steps:
Sift 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a bowl.
Add 2 ounces of hot water (not boiling).
Whisk in an “M” motion using a bamboo whisk until frothy.
Optional: Add milk for a creamy matcha latte.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes, matcha contains caffeine—about 25-35mg per teaspoon, which is less than a cup of coffee. However, its unique blend of caffeine and L-theanine provides a calm, focused energy without the crash.
